My analysis of this man’s ‘half fingers-in-pocket’ posture is that it conveys – UNCERTAINTY. It seems he wants to be more open and REVEAL his entire hands, but because of his uncertainty, he can’t commit to doing it.

Like this person, ANYTIME you can be seen, it forms an impression of you, and a potential for LOSS or GAIN. What impressions are you leaving?

An important time to leave a positive impression is when you ENTER a room. Here is a two-step SCHEMA that has paid off for my clients:
1. Enter radiating warmth and acceptance, and with a level of calm enthusiasm.

2. Think S.O.D.A. This is: STOP upon entry. OBSERVE the room. DECIDE where to sit/move to. (then) ACT – Move to that seat/place.
(Most people on entry just ACT).

Leaving aside the merit of former Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott’s leadership and policies – my view is that the body language he displays in this image is not consistent with that of a leader of state.

With his hunched, closed posture, with hands clutched together in his lap and his apprehensive facial expression, Mr. Abbott unfortunately looks more like a school-boy waiting for instruction.

If you are a leader you are always conveying impressions. To inspire confidence in your followers – you need to look, sound, carry and conduct yourself like a leader.

At the Congressional hearings, Mark Zuckerberg is a picture of stiffness. This is due to discomfort in having turnout in a suit. Can’t remember ever seeing him in one. It looks freshly bought.

As well, the ‘charm coaching’ he received prior to the hearing has resulted in zombie-like, frozen eyes and half-smile. I can imagine his coach saying, ‘Mark, smile but not too much’.
